Hurst is a technique used to analyse financial data that allows one to study the behaviour of a historical series by verifying its trend and predicting its future course. This technique is named after the British mathematician Harold Edwin Hurst, who developed the method in the 1950s.

Hurst’s goal is to identify trends in time series, i.e. the direction in which a particular trend is moving. This technique is based on the concept of‘memory persistence‘, i.e. the tendency of a time series to continue in the same direction in which it is moving.

Memory persistence, ring a bell?

The‘Persistence of Memory‘ is a famous Surrealist painting by Spanish painter Salvador Dalí in 1931. This painting depicts a dreamlike, surreal scene in which a series of soft, as if melted, clocks are set against a desert landscape.

The painting has become one of the most iconic symbols of the Surrealist movement, known for its ability to represent the unreal and surreal through imagination and dreams. Moreover, it is often interpreted as a reflection on the theme of time and its relativity.

The soft clocks represent the ephemeral nature of time and its tendency to slip away while the still, desert landscape suggests stability and immortality. The painting invites the viewer to enter a kind of dreamlike dimension in which time dissolves and imagination takes over from reality.

Amusing, isn’t it? Let’s move on.

To use Hurst’s technique, one starts by analysing a historical series of financial data. We then calculate the so-called ‘Hurst range’, which is a measure of the volatility of the historical series. The Hurst range is calculated by dividing the standard deviation of the time series data by the square root of time.

If the Hurst range is greater than 0.5, the time series is considered ‘persistent’, i.e. it has a tendency to continue in the same direction in which it is moving. If, on the other hand, the Hurst range is less than 0.5, the time series is considered ‘anti-persistent’, i.e. it has a tendency to return to the mean after undergoing a change.

Hurst analysis is useful because it can be used to predict the future behaviour of a time series. If a persistent time series is identified, for example, it can be assumed that it will continue in the same direction in the future. This information can be used to make investment decisions.

Hurst analysis is a useful technique for analysing financial data and predicting their future behaviour. However, it must be used with caution and with a full understanding of its limitations and potential. In any case, the Hurst technique can be a valuable tool for investors who wish to make informed decisions based on trends in financial data.
