The race for artificial intelligence is driving up trading volumes on blockchains, but long-time holders are aiming for $100,000: now Bitcoin and Ethereum are undergoing a transformation

The cryptocurrency market is undergoing a transformation amid the rise of AI and the anticipation of Bitcoin reaching $100,000. A new balance is emerging between long-standing investors and disruptive innovations.

The cryptocurrency sector is undergoing a period of profound change, driven by the expansion of artificial intelligence and the growing tokenisation of markets. Matt Hougan, CIO of Bitwise, highlights a perspective that many are underestimating by a factor of ten or even a hundred when it comes to actual activity on blockchains: the arrival of AI agents in tokenised markets promises an exponential increase in transactions, revolutionising the way value and information circulate globally.

Against this backdrop, Bitcoin is at the centre of renewed attention. John Darsie, CEO of SALT and a partner at SkyBridge, identifies the $100,000 mark as a ‘magic threshold’ for major long-term investors: a psychological level that could prompt so-called ‘OG sellers’ (long-standing holders) to rethink their strategies. This is not simply a matter of price, but a further sign of the market’s maturation: those who were there at Bitcoin’s inception now find themselves in a landscape increasingly dominated by institutional players, regulatory developments and new technologies.

The rise of AI algorithms is also a game-changer for Ethereum, which has been at the forefront of innovation in decentralised infrastructure for years. The integration of automated processing and smart contracts opens up scenarios that go beyond DeFi and encroach on the boundaries of traditional fintech. Whilst Bitcoin represents the store of value that everyone watches to gauge the health and sentiment of the market, Ethereum continues to be the living laboratory where use cases destined to redefine the rules of the game are being tested. The convergence with artificial intelligence could accelerate the transition towards an increasingly digital economy, based on autonomous processes and trustless transactions.

Yet, behind the mind-boggling figures and futuristic visions, certain uncertainties are also emerging. The data suggests that transactions are increasing at a rate that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago, but it remains to be seen how much of this growth will be structural and how much will be driven by the enthusiasm of the moment. The system has yet to prove that it can integrate credible regulations and safeguards for less experienced participants, all whilst major investors weigh up whether to stay in or exit the market at new all-time highs.

Ultimately, the contest between technological innovators and established investors is now, more than ever, being played out on a rapidly changing playing field. Anyone who thinks the cryptocurrency sector has already reached its peak is perhaps merely looking to the past: the real revolution, with AI at its heart, may not even have begun. And for some, walking away now would be the biggest mistake of all.
