Peter Thiel quits ETHZilla: why the exit from the largest listed Ethereum treasury scares the market

Thiel and the Founders Fund wiped out their 7.5 per cent stake in ETHZilla as the stock plummeted 98 per cent from its highs: the 'Ethereum on the Exchange' strategy under scrutiny.

There is a fine line between visionary gamble and financial trap, and the crypto market crosses it with embarrassing frequency. Peter Thiel, the co-founder of PayPal, one of Facebook’s historical backers, and an iconic figure in American venture capital, notified the SEC through a Form 13G amendment that he had completely wiped out his stake in ETHZilla Corporation, the Nasdaq-listed company that had built its identity around the systematic accumulation of Ethereum as a corporate treasury asset. The news, which emerged on Tuesday 17 February, confirmed with cold bureaucratic precision what the graph of the ETHZ share had already been telling for months: from zero to zero, down 98% from the highs.

ETHZilla’s story has all the ingredients of a case study destined to enter the textbooks on financial speculation in crypto times. Rebranded from biomedical company 180 Life Sciences in 2025, ETHZilla had raised $425 million first and another $350 million in convertible bonds later, aiming to become the ‘MicroStrategy of Ethereum’. The announcement of the investment by Thiel’s Founders Fund in August 2025 had been greeted as a blessing: the shares had skyrocketed to an effective high of $174.60 (taking into account the subsequent 1-for-10 split in October). Today, those same shares trade at around $3.62. The comparison with Ethereum ‘s performance over the same period is merciless but also revealing: ETH lost about 61% from its all-time high in August to about $1,944, but ETHZ stock did far worse, amplifying the descent with destructive leverage fuelled by debt, buybacks and dilution.

The sequence of ETHZilla’s final events recounts a company that gradually dismantled its original thesis under market pressure. By October 2025, the company had sold $40 million in ETH to finance share buybacks. By December 2025, it had liquidated 24,291 ETH for USD 74.5 million to repay the debt. In January 2026, another 3,965 ETH were sold for $12.58 million for additional cash needs. What remains on the balance sheet is about 65,850 ETH, a position that seems more residual than strategic. In order to survive, ETHZilla is now attempting a pivot towards tokenization of real assets: jet leasing engines worth over $12 million, with plans to expand into mortgages on prefabricated houses and car loans. The intellectual distance from ‘treasury Ethereum’ to ‘prefabricated house loans’ is so great that it is hard not to smile bitterly.

Thiel’s exit has a symbolic weight that goes far beyond ETHZilla’s numbers. The Founders Fund had revealed a 7.5 per cent stake in August 2025, with Thiel individually holding 11,592,241 shares. Six entities in the group are now all zero: FF Consumer Growth II, The Founders Fund Growth II Management, FF Upper Tier GP, FF Consumer Growth, The Founders Fund Growth Management and Thiel personally. At the same time, The Founders Fund also significantly reduced its exposure in BitMine (BMNR), the largest listed Ethereum treasury by capitalisation, from over 5 million shares to less than 2 million in a few months. The signal is clear: the ‘corporate treasury on ETH’ model has not convinced even those who had played an enabling role in the narrative.

In the background, Bitcoin offers the most direct comparison: Michael Saylor ‘s Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) has amassed 714,644 BTC and, despite the paper losses associated with the price drop, has not yet liquidated a single coin. The structural difference between the Strategy model and the ETHZilla model lies in the discipline of execution and the depth of the balance sheet: Saylor built a fundraising mechanism (equity and convertibles) calibrated to the ability to withstand long cycles without selling pressure. ETHZilla, on the other hand, found itself in a liquidity trap in which every drop in ETH’s price increased the real cost of debt and reduced the value of collateral, triggering forced sales that further amplified the drop.

Peter Thiel’s exit from ETHZilla is not just the end of an investment gone wrong: it is the verdict of one of Silicon Valley’s sharpest investors that‘replicating MicroStrategy with ETH‘ was a structurally more fragile idea than the 2025 narrative would have you believe. The market had known this for months, the graph was unmistakable, but apparently sometimes it takes a few more ‘signatures’ to really get it.
