Bitcoin tops $75,500, with analysts divided over the sustainability of the rally

Bitcoin has once again captured the markets’ attention by breaking through the $75,500 mark overnight, fuelling speculation about a potential new bull run for cryptocurrencies. Against a backdrop of sharp price movements in Ethereum too, the level reached marks a new cycle high, but leaves several questions unanswered regarding the true extent of this rally. This volatility is part of a global landscape marked by macroeconomic uncertainty, whilst demand for Bitcoin from both retail and institutional investors appears to be holding up despite the headwinds.

The sudden surge can be partly explained by increased buying both on the spot market and via ETFs, an investment vehicle increasingly sought after by major players. However, according to various on-chain data, the growing share of transactions is accompanied by significant movements from long-standing wallets: after months of accumulation, some long-term holders have begun to take profits, particularly in the wake of the latest price surges. Ethereum, for its part, remains in the spotlight, with developments on Layer 2 and new DeFi projects fuelling expectations, although it has not yet replicated the bullish pressure seen on Bitcoin.

Despite the enthusiasm of part of the community, critical voices are emerging amongst industry analysts. Shawn Young, chief analyst at MEXC Research, urges caution and describes the rally as “premature”, arguing that the market is placing excessive weight on the US Treasury’s recent moves regarding monetary policy and regulation. The fear is that the positive sentiment, whilst robust, is too heavily anchored in narratives rather than structural data, risking a sharp reversal should institutional investors decide to reduce their exposure in the coming weeks. The debate does not spare Ethereum either, which is in the crosshairs of those who fear a longer consolidation phase for the market’s second-largest asset.

Pressure from short-term traders thus clashes with the caution of long-standing investors, whilst the crypto ecosystem continues to evolve amidst innovation and regulatory risks. Against this backdrop, the distinction between Bitcoin and Ethereum is becoming more pronounced: the former retains its role as a safe-haven asset in times of uncertainty, whilst the latter seeks new catalysts through technical upgrades, alternative layers and projects that look beyond pure price speculation. The Italian market, like the European one, remains more focused on the strength of fundamentals than on short-term euphoria, keeping a close eye on opportunities and systemic risks.

Ultimately, breaking through the $75,500 mark represents more of a test of strength than a genuine trend reversal. As long as long-term holders continue to cash out and the big players remain vigilant, the cryptocurrency market will offer no easy certainties. Those who allow themselves to be guided solely by chart highs risk mistaking the bull run for a mirage: and in a sector that rewards speed, the risk of stumbling is always just around the corner.
